Core identity and application information
- Valid passport or accepted travel document with a blank page where required.
- Online application answers and declared travel dates.
- Certified translations for documents not in English or Welsh.
- Previous passports or travel history where relevant and available.
Purpose and plans for the visit
- A clear explanation of the permitted activity: tourism, family visit, business, study, medical treatment or another Visitor activity.
- Planned dates, accommodation and a realistic estimated cost.
- Invitation or event information where it helps explain the purpose.
- Extra route-specific material for medical treatment, academics, paid engagements, marriage or short study where applicable.
Funding and financial circumstances
- Evidence showing who will pay for travel, accommodation and daily costs.
- Bank or income records that are consistent with the amount and source of funds relied upon.
- Employment, self-employment, study, pension or other circumstances where relevant.
- If another person pays, evidence of their support, funds, relationship and lawful UK status where relevant.
- There is no single published minimum bank balance for every visitor.
Connection to home and intention to leave
- Information about employment, business, study, close family, property or other continuing commitments where relevant.
- Evidence should be genuine and proportionate to the applicant's actual circumstances.
- A return ticket alone does not establish that the Visitor rules are met.
- Do not manufacture reservations, employment letters or financial activity for an application.
Family visit information
- Host's name, address and relationship to the applicant.
- Host's passport or immigration-status evidence where relevant.
- Invitation and accommodation information.
- If the host pays, evidence explaining what they will cover and that they can afford it.
- The applicant's own purpose, circumstances and intention to leave still matter.
Documents required only in some cases
- TB certificate for certain visits lasting more than 6 months where the published rules apply.
- Parental consent and care arrangements for a child travelling alone or with one adult.
- Evidence for private medical treatment, organ donation, permitted paid engagement or academic activity.
- ATAS where a Visitor undertaking relevant research needs it.
- Marriage Visitor applicants use the separate marriage route and ceremony evidence.

Does a flight or hotel booking guarantee a Visitor visa?+
No. Bookings do not guarantee a decision. GOV.UK advises applicants to provide information supporting the permitted purpose, funding and intention to leave, while the official application determines the final checklist.
Is there one mandatory bank balance for every visitor?+
No single universal amount is published for every visitor. The information should show that the planned visit can be funded in light of its length, costs, income, support and circumstances.
Does a family sponsor remove the need to explain the applicant's circumstances?+
No. A sponsor can provide support, but the application can still require information about the applicant, purpose, funding, relationship, circumstances and intention to leave.
